NDI is a protocol to transport video streams over a TCP/IP network.

Many applications enable streaming video over the network using NDI. Most PTZ cameras support this protocol. There are also conversion boxes between NDI and HDMI/SDI.

You can download some free tools and find more information on the Newtek website (NDI integration for VLC, testing tools, NDI integration for Adobe suite, etc).

If you do not have access to NDI streams on your network, create some dummy ones with these tools to continue the tutorial.

Adding NDI feeds

We will assume that 4 NDI streams are currently available on your network.

In the Media list panel click the button, and select NDI.

Select the NDI media and in the Editor panel and click the Search... button. In the pop-up window choose one of the NDI streams on your network.

Rename the input and repeat this operation 3 more times to add the 4 NDI sources available on the network.

You should have the following streams in your Media List:

  • CAMERA 1: A camera view of the speaker
  • CAMERA 2: Another camera view of the speaker
  • SPEAKER PPT: Stream of the speaker’s powerpoint
  • PLAYER: A stream from a Video Player (can be from another computer for instance) to play last minute content or unsupported codecs

Add a Counter & Text

In the Media list panel click the button and select Timecode.

Select the TImecode and in the Editor panel rename it Speaker countdown.

Set the Type to Out Countdown and the Display Mode to HH:MM:SS.

In the Media list panel click the button and select Text.

Select the Text and in the Editor panel rename it Time left.

Add the text TIME LEFT and set the Font Size to 20.

We will use this Counter and text to display the time left on the speaker’s screen.
